First Look at Jason Wu Fall 2012

As the shows of New York Fashion Week begin rolling in, opening with a crash of cymbals and through an enormous wooden red bathed doorway emerged the eastern inspired Jason Wu ”fierce women” of his heavily Chinese influenced Fall 2012 collection.

Evoking three various aspects in paying homage to his Chinese heritage, Wu firstly played on the militaristic army-green incredibly Mao Communist attire, which in its utilitarian military edge  and strict silhouettes made the collection profoundly similar to that of both the Louis Vuitton and Viktor & Rolf Fall 2011 collections. Secondly, historically referencing the Qing Dynasty Wu carried distinctly opulent adornment and detailed embroideries, and finally evoking the claimed “inauthentic” (Jason Wu) Hollywood depiction of China of the ‘40’s such as the film Shanghai Express. As a film noir, his reference to Shanghai Express in its ‘overpowering visuals’ and ornate and extravagant costumes’ Wu incorporated deep wine hues which infused both mystery and elegance, while tones of beaming red and pink manipulated various pieces including a set of velvet cocktail dresses and luxurious evening gowns.

His army of Chinese power women made for a show and collection rather darker and considerably lurid than his lustrous Spring 2012 collection, as Wu has taken a more mature and critiquing attitude to his influences in his most striking show to date.
Deep floral prints in bold metallic proves as the highlight medium of the show, as they were translated onto fitted jackets to dresses and skinny pants in impeccably tailoring.Carving strict silhouettes of body-conscious key hole cut-out dresses, knee length pencil skirts, tightly belted jackets and lean legged pants Wu added touches of black lace and brocades to his creations, which ascended to elegantly stunning red and black laced evening dresses as he flaunted his opulent dress making inclinations in standout pieces.
